In the scheme of things, is restricting parking really tantamount to a declaration of war?

There has never been, and never will be, a war on motorists. Witney's policy of charging for two measly public toilets, while providing free parking for some thousands of cars, tells you all you need to know about the establishment's attitude towards the motor car.

For reference it's obviously worth mentioning (if only because the Indy didn't) the CTC's "Stop SMIDSY" campaign; but also the fact that
courts are starting to pay attention. Such cultural changes are always going to be slow, I suppose: it's a deep cultural acceptance of SMIDSY, that it's somehow right that the onus is on the disempowered victim, not the privileged aggressor, that's the real danger. That could change, given time.

The comedian Mark Watson once said something like "I didn't know there was a war on motorists. Someone should've told me…. I'd have shot a few in the eyes…. Well, you've got to do your bit, haven't you?"
