SWLeafLogoNewWe’re still active on our Facebook page so head over there to see what we’re up to.

The archive of posts here still gets ‘hits’ from people searching sustainable subjects and will stay here while that’s the case or until we have some enthusiastic authors with something new to say.

Spring planning meeting: all welcome!

April 6th, 2015

On Wednesday 22 April we’ll be having our spring planning meeting at the Como Lounge on Market Square.

The committee and other volunteers will be there from 7pm, so come along if you’re interested in what we’re doing, or want to learn about sustainability in Witney more generally!

You could volunteer for thermal imaging!

February 12th, 2015

We’ve run a longstanding project to thermally image people’s homes (this is its third season) and we’d like new volunteers to be a part of the team. Could you help others reduce carbon emissions and tackle fuel poverty?

Over winter, usually in November and February, we accept requests to photograph the outsides of people’s houses, looking for heat escape that might indicate something they can improve in their property. By March this year we’ll have visited over 200 houses, and we hope to have given extra in-person advice to around 80 of those householders.

Interested? You’ll need to have several evenings free in November and February, to spend 2+hrs walking around Witney estates with another volunteer. Good photographs are strongly dependent on clear, cold, dry, not-windy weather, so you might need to be on email at fairly short notice when the weather forecasts come out. You’ll be given training in using the camera and advice on how we as a group usually use it.

The more volunteers we have on a roster, the simpler it gets to find enough evenings where at least two are free. So we’d love it if you could contact us, or come along to the feedback meeting on Tuesday 10 March to see what it involves.

Reminder: our AGM on Wednesday 11 February

February 2nd, 2015

A week on Wednesday, Sustainable Witney has its yearly AGM: and you’re all invited!

We’ll be in a room in St Mary’s Church, off Church Green, from 7.30pm and we’ll be discussing both our successes for 2014 and plans for 2015, and also electing new committee members: more details on the event’s own page. See you there?

Come to our Christmas drinks, Wednesday 17 December

November 25th, 2014

You’re invited to our Christmas drinks, on Wednesday 17 December, just off Church Green!

This event to say thank you to our members for a great year, and to celebrate our five-year anniversary which is this December. We’re also welcoming new members and hope to chat with interested people from other local groups or just from the general public.

The fun starts at 7.30pm; we’ve got the room booked in St Mary’s Church; we’ve planned mince pies, mulled wine and more: so come and celebrate with us!

(Please do let us know if you’re coming, so we can make sure we’ve got enough of everything.)

Christmas drinks just off Church Green

November 2nd, 2014

Sustainable Witney invites you to Christmas mulled wine and mince pies, on December 17, from 7.30pm. We’ve hired a room at St Mary’s on Church Green especially, and you can come along and chat to other members about the year just passed for SW, and what 2015 might bring.

Everyone welcome, even if you don’t fancy volunteering: we value your thoughts on SW; and those mince pies won’t eat themselves! But please do let us know if you’re coming, so we can make sure we’ve got enough of everything.

Committee meeting, tonight, 7.30pm

October 15th, 2014

If you can brave this decidedly autumnal weather, we’re having our quarterly committtee meeting tonight, starting at 7.30pm, in St Mary’s Church on Church Green. We’ll be discussing all of our upcoming projects so feel free to come along if you’re interested. No pressure on anyone to volunteer, although we won’t refuse if you do!

Autumn event schedule: Swap Shop, Dinnertime, Cogges Christmas, committee meeting…!

September 21st, 2014

We’ve come back from our summer break with a great schedule of sustainable events for Witney in autumn. We’re not finished yet, but here’s what’s already planned thanks to SW and other CAGs and like-minded organizations:

  • The committee is having its quarterly meeting at St Mary’s Church on Wednesday 15 October. All welcome: you don’t have to volunteer if you come along.
  • There’s an autumn Swap Shop at Cogges on Sunday 26 October. Come along, get rid of your old (working) stuff, and maybe find a bargain.
  • Dinnertime returns to Witney on Sunday 19 October. Click through and have a look at that amazing food they cooked last time; and then let Ellie know you’re coming along via the contact link on that post.
  • We have a stall at Cogges Christmas fair on Sunday 7 December, where we’ll be demonstrating sustainable Christmas decorations!

We’re also planning a sustainable drinks some time in the autumn, an informal social evening where we don’t have to feel like we’re organizing or doing specific tasks. Keep informed of this, and all our events, by registering to subscribe to our news feed.

SW meeting on Wednesday

July 3rd, 2014

This is just a reminder that on Wednesday 9 July we’ll be chatting with local organization network CAG Oxfordshire, accompanied by a bring-and-share meal. The meeting will be at St Mary’s Church, on the Leys end of Church Green. All are welcome! We start at 7:30pm.

It will take place at St Mary’s Church on Church Green in Witney, and we hope to have a bring-and-share meal beforehand, so do bring some food if you’re interested. More details on the event’s own page.

July 9th meeting is now a CAG chat and bring-and-share meal

June 10th, 2014

For our summer SW meeting, we’ll be chatting with the good folks at local organization network CAG Oxfordshire, accompanied by a bring-and-share meal. This will take place from 7.30pm on Wednesday 9 July, at St Mary’s Church, on the Leys end of Church Green.

Oxfordshire is especially lucky in the sheer scale of its network of Community Action Groups (CAGs), of which Sustainable Witney is one. These groups both support each other and also benefit from the great centralized help and advice provided by the kind folk at CAG Oxfordshire.

That means it’s easier than you might think, to set up and run your own local CAG. So why not come along: for ideas, inspiration, and maybe even a helping hand?

Upcoming events: energy efficiency, cycle users and swap shop

March 31st, 2014

This is just a quick reminder of three Sustainable Witney-related events happening this week:

Something for everyone this week! Kind of. But you should put those in your diary if you haven’t already; and if you want to be kept abreast of local and related meetings and news, you should definitely register for the Sustainable Witney website. In return you’ll email notifications of our posts.

Quarterly SW meeting dates announced!

February 26th, 2014

At our AGM a couple of weeks ago (more on that soon) we agreed to book our next four quarterly meetings. That way, you’ll know when and where to find us! We’re meeting on:

If that sounds a bit over-organized then don’t worry: we’ve planned in advance so you don’t have to! Everyone’s welcome at the meetings and you don’t have to feel like it will commit you to helping out (although it’s always appreciated when people can volunteer an hour or two at a swap shop or similar event.)

One advantage of planning this in advance is that we can also confirm that all of these meetings will be held in Witney town centre: in fact, in St Mary’s Church, right at the end of Church Green. If it’s a sunny July then I might even try to get everyone to sit outside… with ice-creams….
