Another Fairtrade First for Witney

February 27th, 2013

Next Thursday 7th March is the date for Witney’s first ever Fairtrade Fashion Show – ‘The Great Cotton Stitch-Up’ – at Witney College campus on Holloway Road (off Welch Way.)

Students from Abingdon & Witney College are designing, making and modelling their own creations from Fairtrade fabrics, supported by the Witney Area Fair Trade Action Group.

There will be delicious Fairtrade refreshments donated by the Co-op, a short film featuring Sir Steve Redgrave, stalls run by Oxfordshire companies selling Fairtrade clothes and jewellery etc., information and a raffle of Fairtrade cotton garments. Most importantly, the students will be strutting their stuff on the catwalk to music provided by fellow college students to help get the message across that we can all make good choices in the fabrics we buy, which will help cotton workers in the developing world.

So come along to the campus at 7 pm on Thursday 7th March and join in the fun!

Tickets are £5 (£3 for students) and will be available from mid-February from the College reception, Oxfam in Market Square in Witney, or online (wegottickets.com). All proceeds will go to support Fairtrade projects.

Edible Gardens March meeting

February 20th, 2013

The Edible Gardens group will meet on Tuesday 19 March [edit: date changed], 10:30am at 6 Spring Close.

This meeting will cover the exciting new developments in the group: they’re organizing a workshop on ‘Grow your own veg: getting started’ at Hailey Road Primary school, provisionally planned for 3 – 4:30pm, Thursday 18th April. More information closer to the time, and come along in March if you’d like to help in April!

March’s meeting is the last one at 10:30: in May, meetings will move to Thursday 1:30 – 3pm, to make it easier for those picking up children from school.

ReFashion in Oxford tomorrow

February 18th, 2013

Something old, something new, something to swap, something for you… Tomorrow is Oxford ReFashion, the event that breathes new life into our old clothes. If you went to last year’s event in Oxford, or came to Witney ReFashion in November, you’ll know what to expect. (The video of our November event gives a flavour too.)

ReFashion is a chance to:

  • Swap your unwanted clothes at the “swishing” event
  • Learn about basic repairs and adjustments
  • Get creative with upcycling
  • Get rid of that tatty old bra at the charity bra bank
  • Take some inspiration from the fashion shows
  • And if your clothes are really beyond hope… send them for recycling into rags!

Oxford ReFashion is at Oxford Town Hall tomorrow (Tuesday 19th Feb 2013). It runs from 1pm-7pm.

The clothes being swapped/upcycled/etc can be for men, women, children and babies. Entry is free and you don’t have to bring anything – you can just wander around. The goal is to reduce the amount of clothing that goes to landfill in Oxfordshire each year, while having some fashion-based fun.

Although it’s an Oxford event, you might spot a few Witney faces there. I’m treating it as an opportunity to spring-clean my wardrobe!

Time to think differently about energy

February 13th, 2013

When the power station Didcot A closes down in 2015, what do we replace it with? Another giant belching chimney? Perhaps a nuclear power station that takes years to build?

Didcot A currently supplies half of Oxfordshire’s energy needs, and even the most idealistic greenie knows that it’s a tough call to replace that output from a renewable source in the time available, whatever technology you choose.

It’s time to think differently about energy. And that’s how the People’s Power Station was born.

Sustainable Witney meeting with woodfuel discussion

February 7th, 2013

On 4 April, Sustainable Witney will have its regular meeting in the back room at the Fleece, starting at 6pm.

After a short admin meeting, at 6.30pm we’ll move onto a discussion with Riki from the Oxfordshire Community Woodfuel Programme. They’ll be discussing smarter (and cheaper) ways of sourcing wood for fuel including “logs for labour” swaps, and also funding for installation of woodfuel boilers.

ReFashion – The Movie

February 6th, 2013

Here you can see the fun we had at the Witney ReFashion event back in November. We will be doing it all again in November this year, however if you simply can’t wait that long, the Oxfordshire Waste Partnership are running one at Oxford Town Hall in two weeks time on 19th February.

Green Deal

February 4th, 2013

In this article, I wanted to take the opportunity to introduce Sustainable Witney readers (those of you not already well acquainted with this new landscape of gaining energy-efficiency improvements, as I know a lot of you already are!) to the ‘Green Deal’ which officially launched last week.
