The first step towards a green Christmas

This Christmas, you might be forgetting the diet and trying to forget the family animosities – but you can still remember to be responsible with your rubbish.

West Oxfordshire District Council says that last year, many people seemed to forget about recycling during the festive period. Recycling rates in the district dropped by around 6% in December and January. That’s a shame when Oxfordshire is normally one of the best counties in England for recycling. So this year, the council is making it easier than ever to dispose of your household rubbish in a sustainable way.

West Oxfordshire District Council is organising roadshows to give people advice on recycling and reducing waste over Christmas. These will be held at:

  • Chipping Norton: Market Place, Wednesday 5 December, 11am – 3pm
  • Woodstock: Market Square, Saturday 8 December, 11am – 1pm
  • Carterton: Co-op, Tuesday 11 December, 11am – 3pm
  • Witney: Sainsbury’s, Wednesday 12 December, 11am – 3pm
  • Witney: Market Square – Thursday 13 December, 11am – 3pm

They’ve also answered a few common questions, and Sustainable Witney is happy to repeat the answers here.

What if I have extra recycling over the festive period?

“This can be put out on collection day next to the black recycling boxes in dry, open cardboard boxes, clear sacks or carrier bags. Black bin liners should not be used for extra recycling and, for health and safety reasons, glass must be put inside recycling boxes. Alternatively, excess recycling can be taken to local recycling banks – see for details.”

What about my Christmas tree?

“Garden waste collections will not be running from 22 December until 6 January to enable the Council’s contractors to concentrate on picking up the extra recycling and waste. From 6 January, residents can leave their real Christmas trees out for collection on their normal garden waste day.”

Will the rubbish/recycling collection dates change over Christmas?

“Due to the Christmas bank holidays, there will be a change to waste and recycling collection days. Residents can check their collection date on their waste and recycling calendar or by visiting”
