Did You Know…

Today is the first day of Climate Week, and what a lovely day it’s been.

Running through to Sunday 27th of March, Climate Week is another initiative aimed at encouraging action to reduce waste in all its forms.

We urge everyone to take part if they can, even if we can’t help raising an eyebrow at the business morals of some of the partners. But hey, they’ve got to start somewhere.

For our part, Sustainable Witney ran it’s first Swap Shop at the weekend which redistributed almost half a tonne of unwanted goods amongst the community. Over 300 people took part and we only had 12.5kg of goods left which couldn’t be reused or recycled and had to go to landfill; just 2.5% of the total.

There are more great things going on this week.

The Oxfordshire Waste Partnership have organised the Wild Waste Show bus to be at Sainsburys from 10am to 1pm on Tuesday.

OWP are also organising tours of the Agrivert anaerobic digester plant at Cassington on Friday – see what happens to your food waste.

Witney based OxTreeGen has launched a mobile phone recycling scheme to mark Climate Week 2011 and the International Year of Forests. The Fone Twigs scheme aims to encourage schools, local businesses and individuals to reduce their carbon footprint by planting a tree for every phone that is handed in for reuse or recycling. Phones can be handed in all week at the Windrush Leisure Centre on Witan Way.
