Yesterday’s meeting of the Edible Gardens group was a timely reminder that we’re getting very close to all systems go in the garden and on the allotment. And while the grown-ups were busy talking vegetables, the children worked on the marketing.
Looking at my notebook it went something like this…
The talk given by Vince Brimble of Sainsburys at the Sustainable Witney AGM was so popular and interesting we ran out of time to complete the business of the meeting.
The Sustainable Witney AGM was adjourned at 9pm on Wednesday 16th February and will be reconvened in the Back Room of The Plough at 6:30pm on Tuesday 1st March 2011.
The meeting will last no longer than 30 minutes to elect the committee for the coming year.
The AGM is this Tuesday in the Green Room (aka Back Room – ask at the bar if in doubt) of The Plough in the High Street.
It’ll be quite informal for an AGM, we will be ordering food, probably from the Pick&Mix menu, and eating during the meeting – you can see the menus on the right sidebar here.
Please let us know if you are coming by Tuesday morning and if you want to order food. We just need to give the Plough an idea of numbers.

First thing Monday 7th February our esteemed Secretary emailed a letter to the Witney Gazette about our local group. It also made reference to Sainsburys’ talk on sustainability at “Sustainable Witney’s first Annual General Meeting taking place at 7pm on 16th February in the Congregational Church in Welch Way.”
The letter wasn’t published in the February 9th edition. Neither did it make it into the February 16th edition. Against all the odds it was published in this week’s February 23rd edition with the phrase above edited to “Sustainable Witney’s first annual general meeting taking place at 7pm on Wednesday this week in the Congregational Church in Welch Way.”
How does a profit-making business stick to its ethical commitments? Can a national supermarket chain really have a relationship with the local community? And why do supermarket apples have those silly stickers on them?
All these questions, and lots more, were answered when Vince Brimble, store manager of Sainsburys in Witney, spoke at the Sustainable Witney AGM.
We now have a year’s worth of actual data on The Carbon Account. It’s not as detailed as it could be because I’ve had some long periods where I’ve forgotten to read the meters – I kicked myself last week when I found the email reminder option! But anyway, we have the year covered even if it is a little coarse.
We’ve insulated the loft but there are plenty of other things we can do in the coming year to reduce our domestic energy consumption, cutting our regular bills as well as our carbon emissions. It’s a process known as eco-renovation or ecovation.

Sustainable Witney’s first Annual General Meeting will take place at 7pm on 16th February in the Congregational Church on Welch Way (next to the Halifax).
Vince Brimble, store manager of Sainsburys in Witney, will be speaking to us about the measures Sainsburys are taking to make their operation in Witney more sustainable.
Previously a store manager in Beaconsfield and also in Kidlington where he worked with the Oxford Food Bank project.
The business of the meeting will follow the talk. Resolutions to be moved at the meeting must reach the Secretary by Wednesday 9th February.
The Town Council will be voting this Wednesday 9th February at 7pm on the following motion to support Witney gaining Fairtrade status.
“Witney Town Council supports the principles of Fair Trade, because it believes all farmers deserve a fair price for their produce, in developing countries as well as in Witney. The Town Council will help and encourage the Witney Area Fair Trade Action Group WAFTAG to achieve and promote Fairtrade status for the town of Witney, provided no expenditure is directly required of the Council. Fairtrade products will be offered as a choice wherever food and drink are served by the Town Council. Details of the support will be determined in discussions between the Council and WAFTAG starting with the meeting agreed by the General Purposes committee at their meeting of 24 January 2011.”
