The Witney Country Market

Five Stars and Twenty –five years

I would class the men and women who have been running the Witney Country Market during the past twenty –five years as local unsung heroes.  With the exception of the month of January and Good Friday when they all are having a well earned rest, there is a queue at the door of the Masonic Hall on Church Green to buy the best of local produce.

Goods at the Country Market are low on food miles.  The range of high quality seasonal vegetables is grown in Witney, freshly picked on Thursdays. A range of interesting plants in top condition are available with expert advice at competitive prices; features which compare most favourably with Garden Centres! In the summer there are often fresh cut flowers on sale.

As there is a range of cooks who bake a selection of cakes, biscuits and savoury items are available. No opportunity is wasted in the cycle of the year’s produce. Seasonal preserves and chutneys are on sale subject to availability-an annual visitor from Canada buys up all the marmalade when he’s in town!  There is always a selection of fresh chicken, meat, bacon, sausages and eggs from Bampton.

The Witney Country Market has been awarded five stars for food hygiene by Oxfordshire County Council – an award which I have yet to see anywhere else.  How wonderful to have such confidence when shopping for food!

If you want to be a regular customer it might be advisable to make orders if you can’t make it as the doors open. Tel :01993 704176  Josie
